*** Below is a sample of rolling up 4 Random Level 0 characters for ShadowDark. The summary is used for Level 0 characters because the information in the Corebook is not all in one place.
In addition you can use the sheet I designed for 1st Level Random Characters too, just follow the rules in the book on pages 40-41. The sheet also works great for NPCs as well.
Summary of Rolling up 4 Random Level Zero Crawlers for a Gauntlet Game
NAME: Talik would be my crawler's name.
CLASS: Remember Level 0 crawlers starting class is "PEASANT" -- Indeed lowly surfs of the land dream only of gold, treasure, and an adventuring life in their futures.
ANCESTRY: See page 40 in the ShadowDark Corebook (SDCB). You roll a d12 for a random Ancestry.
BACKGROUND: See page 26 in the SDCB. Roll a d20 for your crawler's Background.
ALIGNMENT: See page 41 in the SDCB. Roll a d6 for your crawler's Alignment.
DEITY: See page 40 in the SDCB. Roll a d8 for your crawler's Deity.
LANGUAGE(S): See pages 16-17 in the SDCB for your Ancestry Language(s) you know how to speak.
LEVEL: Your Level is 0. You're a peasant by the way.
STATS: See page 15 in the SDCB for rolling up your Random Crawler's stats.
HIT POINTS: See page 14 in the SDCB. You start out with Hit Points equal to your Constitution's modifier (minimum of 1).
ARMOR CLASS: See page 33 in the SDCB. Your Amor Class is 10 + your Dexterity modifier. Wearing armor changes your AC (see Armor, page 36).
GEAR: Because Level 0 crawlers have "beginner's luck" they can wield all gear until first level. See the Gear Chart on page 41 in the SDCB. Random Level 0 crawlers roll 1d4 for the amount of items in their Gear. Then roll d12 for each item.
TALENT: See pages 16-17 in the SDCB for your Ancestry's ONE and only Talent you start with. Humans have the Ambitious Ancestry Talent. So the question goes: What ONE Talent does your Random Level 0 Human Crawler start with?
You can decide one of three things:
1.) They start out with NO Talent until they reach their 1st Level.
2.) You can base a Talent off your Background. For example if you roll #14 Soldier you might roll for ONE Talent off of the Fighter Class Talent Chart. If you roll #5 Banished or #19 Noble your GM could award you a +1 bonus or advantage in something.
3.) Looking at your stats: If you have a higher Strength you could roll for ONE Talent off of the Fighter Class Talent Chart. If you have a higher Intelligence you could roll for ONE Talent off of the Wizard Class Talent Chart. If you have a higher Wisdom you could roll for ONE Talent off of the Priest Class Talent Chart. Talk with your GM and gaming group if a Random 0 Level Human (Peasant) Crawler will start with a Talent.
SPELL: Sorry Level 0 Peasants do not start with a spell.
COIN: Peasants are poor, they do not start out with any Gold Pieces.
*** If ALL of your Level 0 Random Crawlers happen to die in The Gaunlet, roll up 4 new characters and repeat the process above.
You can use the SHADOWDARK / RANDOM CRAWLERS character sheet to generate 1st Level Random crawlers as well. Just follow the same rules in the book.
